Modern Road General Specification
Here is the step by step general specification of the modern road-
1- Subgrade
The subgrade is compacted and consolidated manually or by using construction equipment with a camber of 1 in 60.
2- Soling
In modern road construction, the soling shall be 300mm wider than the metalled width of the road surface.
Soiling consists of either overburnt bricks laid flat or on edge well packed and their joints properly filled up with sand.
The surface is blinded with the 23mm thick earth or 150mm of split stone boulders laid well packed and lightly rolled with a roller.
3- Inter Coat
In the modern road, the inter-coat shall be overburnt brick ballast or stone ballast of 120mm thick layer.
The inter-coat is consolidated and compacted to 80mm by a road roller.

4- Top Coat
The top coat is laid in 120 mm thick layer and the top coat must be compacted and consolidated by a road roller to 80mm.
The top coat must be of stone ballast.
5- First And Second Coat Of Bituminous Painting
In the modern road the first coat of bituminous painting of asphalt or road tar number 3 and the stone grit of 20mm and down at 220kg of asphalt and 0.75 m3 of stone grit per 100 m2.
The second coat of bituminous painting shall be asphalt or tar no 3-A and stone grit of 12mm and down at 120 kg of asphalt and 0.75m3 of stone grit per 100 m2.
6- Brick Edging
In modern road construction, the brick edging with straight over burnt bricks must be provided on both sides of the road.
7- Wearing Surface
If the traffic is heavy on the road then the wearing surface shall be provided with cement concrete or bituminous carpet in the place of bituminous painting.
